Hello Anxiety
There has been a lot of press about the anticipated effect of a Trump-Vance American Presidency on Canada. PM Trudeau didn’t get along with President Trump the first term, and a lot is anticipated Pierre Pollivier and Donald Trump in the likely next one.
Though, the cloud of probable tariffs hangs over considerations.
J.D. Vance, Donald Trump’s running mate is a well-known anti-Ukraine war advocate. Not so many People know about his zionist sympathies nor his China hawk status.
While Donald Trump’s attitude to China is well-known, most People hope, despite his Israeli sympathies, he may stop the killing in Palestine. Donald Trump STOP the sale of American weapons to Israel? STOP a sale by which he profits? I think not.
No one is talking about JD Vance ‘anti-Europe’ attitude, nor Donald Trump’s nationalism.
Europeans are scared.
Ivan Krastev has an article in this morning’s Financial Times wherein he writes about how the United States’ domestic issues are going to overwhelm its international leadership. To quote: In the absence of some dramatic change, the US & its global influence could be biggest loser of election. The more US looks crisis-ridden & dangerous…the more the country needs a president who can talk about, & represent, the future”
I suggest no matter who wins the election, things are going to change. Are changing?.
And, point out this from yesterday’s Oilprc: https://oilprice.com/Latest-Energy-News/World-News/Asian-Market-Buys-First-Oil-Cargoes-From-Canadas-Trans-Mountain-Pipeline.html.
I don’t even like oil, but suggest we are selling more of the stuff to Asia-Pacific countries. At least, selling it to an expansive market rather than only to the soon to be cashstrapped US.
To quote: South Korean refiner GS Caltex will split a 550,000-barrel Cold Lake crude cargo with Japan's top refiner ENEOS, with GS Caltex taking 300,000 barrels while ENEOS will get 250,000 barrels. South Korea's top refiner SK Energy, a unit of SK Innovation, bought a 550,00-barrel cargo from Unipec while Hengyi Petrochemical, a refinery operator in Brunei, also purchased a similar volume of crude from PetroChina Co (OTCPK:PCCYF). All the cargoes were sold at discounts of between $5 and $6 a barrel to ICE Brent.
And, the ramifications from the American election will be can we sell to China?
I think we’re on the cusp of the absurd: free trade advocates arguing international trade, but only with allies. So, not free trade. At all.
And, NAFTA or CUSMA is not going to work when one jurisdiction feels free to impose tariffs and expects everyone else to put up with them. Or, leaders do thus infuriating domestic markets. I actually don’t think Mexico will.
Canada ALREADY opposes the US on the matter of Ukraine. And, our politicos were united in its support of the country, and the ASOV guys who are n$#@: Canadian politicos were unanimous. Like him or hate him, Matt Gaetz, an American Congressman, opposed sending Ukraine money, so, stood out from the crowd. And, Donald Trump is aligned with him.
Meaning we are probably already behind the 8-Ball when it comes to relations with the United States, so, we oughta be broadening our perspective.
